Amy Adams has one of the most impressive résumés in Hollywood. She has played a Disney princess, Lois Lane, a nun, a con artist and a linguist trying to communicate with aliens. Along the way, she has earned six Academy Award nominations and the respect of directors and critics alike.
Early life
Amy Lou Adams was born on August 20, 1974, in Vicenza, Italy, where her father was stationed with the U.S. Army. She was one of seven children, and the family settled in Castle Rock, Colorado, when she was young.
She trained in dance as a teenager and, after high school, worked in dinner theater in Colorado and Minnesota, including at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres near Minneapolis.
Early career
Adams made her film debut in the satire “Drop Dead Gorgeous” (1999), which was shot in Minnesota. She moved to Los Angeles and worked in television guest roles before landing a part as a young nurse in Steven Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can” (2002), opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
Junebug
Her breakthrough came in the independent film “Junebug” (2005), in which she played Ashley, a talkative, endlessly hopeful pregnant woman in North Carolina. The performance won a special jury prize at Sundance and earned her a first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.
Enchanted
Disney’s “Enchanted” (2007) made her a star. Adams played Giselle, a cartoon princess transported to modern-day New York, singing, dancing and charming the city. The film blended animation and live action and was a box-office hit. A sequel, “Disenchanted,” followed in 2022.
Awards contender
Adams became a regular presence at awards season. She earned Oscar nominations for “Doubt” (2008), as a young nun opposite Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman; “The Fighter” (2010), as the tough girlfriend of boxer Micky Ward; “The Master” (2012), as the wife of a cult leader; “American Hustle” (2013), as a con artist; and “Vice” (2018), as Lynne Cheney.
She won Golden Globes for “American Hustle” and for Tim Burton’s “Big Eyes” (2014), in which she played painter Margaret Keane.
Arrival
In Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (2016), Adams played Louise Banks, a linguist recruited to communicate with extraterrestrial visitors. The film was widely acclaimed, and many critics considered her performance among her best. The same year she starred in Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals.”
Lois Lane
Adams played Lois Lane in “Man of Steel” (2013), “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017).
Television
She starred in HBO’s limited series “Sharp Objects” (2018), adapted from Gillian Flynn’s novel, as a troubled journalist returning to her hometown. The role earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She later starred in “Nightbitch” (2024), a dark comedy about motherhood.
Producer
Adams runs the production company Bond Group Entertainment, which has developed film and television projects including “Nightbitch.”
Personal life
Adams married actor and artist Darren Le Gallo in 2015, after a long engagement. They have a daughter.
Reputation
Directors often describe Adams as fearless and deeply prepared, and she is known for disappearing into very different characters. Despite six nominations without a win, she is frequently cited as one of the finest actresses of her generation, and her body of work speaks for itself.
Where to start
Watch “Junebug,” “Enchanted,” “Doubt,” “The Fighter,” “American Hustle” and “Arrival.” Few actors could convincingly play every one of those roles, and Adams makes each feel like the part she was born to play.
Legacy
Adams has built her career on choosing characters rather than franchises, moving between big studio films and small independent dramas without losing credibility in either world. That balance has made her a favorite of filmmakers ranging from Paul Thomas Anderson to David O. Russell and Denis Villeneuve.
