Charlize Theron is known for disappearing into roles, whether that means transforming her appearance for a dramatic part or training for months to perform her own fight scenes. She is also an influential producer and a committed advocate for young people in Africa.
Early life
Charlize Theron was born on Aug. 7, 1975, in Benoni, South Africa, and grew up on a farm outside Johannesburg. Her first language is Afrikaans. She trained in ballet and, after winning a modeling competition at 16, worked as a model in Europe before moving to New York to study dance. A knee injury ended her ballet ambitions, and she moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Early roles
Theron appeared in “2 Days in the Valley” (1996) and “That Thing You Do!” before co-starring with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino in “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997). Roles followed in “Mighty Joe Young,” “The Cider House Rules” and “The Italian Job” (2003).
Monster
Theron transformed herself to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins’ “Monster” (2003), gaining weight and wearing prosthetics. Critic Roger Ebert called it one of the greatest performances in cinema history. She won the Academy Award for best actress, becoming the first South African to win an Oscar in an acting category.
She received another nomination for “North Country” (2005), as a miner who fights sexual harassment, and a third for “Bombshell” (2019), as Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.
Action icon
Theron reinvented the action heroine as Imperator Furiosa in George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), which won six Oscars. She played a Cold War spy in “Atomic Blonde” (2017), performing much of her own stunt work, and starred in Netflix’s “The Old Guard” (2020) and its sequel. She has also appeared in the “Fast & Furious” franchise as the villain Cipher.

Africa Outreach Project
In 2007 Theron founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, which supports young people in Southern Africa with HIV prevention, education and health programs. She was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008, focusing on ending violence against women.
Personal life
Theron became a U.S. citizen in 2007 and has two adopted daughters, whom she is raising in Los Angeles. She has spoken candidly about her childhood, including a traumatic family event when she was 15, to encourage conversations about domestic violence.

Theron has been the face of Dior’s J’adore fragrance since 2004, one of the longest-running partnerships between an actress and a luxury brand.
Physical commitment
Theron’s preparation for action roles is legendary.
