Dwayne Johnson: From the Wrestling Ring to Hollywood’s Biggest Star

Dwayne Johnson has turned charisma into an empire. A former college football player and wrestling champion, he became one of the most bankable movie stars on the planet and later built a business portfolio that stretches from tequila to sports leagues.

Early life

Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. His father, Rocky Johnson, and grandfather, Peter Maivia, were professional wrestlers, and he grew up partly in Hawaii, New Zealand and Pennsylvania as the family moved for work.

He played defensive tackle at the University of Miami and was part of the 1991 national championship team. After a brief stint in the Canadian Football League, he turned to wrestling.

The Rock

Johnson debuted in the World Wrestling Federation, now WWE, in 1996. Reinventing himself as “The Rock,” he became one of the most popular performers of the “Attitude Era,” known for catchphrases and a raised eyebrow. He won multiple world championships.

Hollywood

His first major film role came as the Scorpion King in “The Mummy Returns” (2001), followed by his own spinoff, “The Scorpion King” (2002). He gradually became a reliable action and family-film lead in movies such as “The Game Plan,” “Race to Witch Mountain” and “Tooth Fairy.”

His career shifted into a higher gear when he joined the “Fast & Furious” franchise with “Fast Five” (2011). Hits followed: “San Andreas,” “Central Intelligence,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017) and its sequel, “Rampage” and “Hobbs & Shaw.” He voiced Maui in Disney’s “Moana” (2016) and returned for “Moana 2” (2024).

In 2025 he took on a dramatic role as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Safdie, opposite Emily Blunt.

Forbes named him the world’s highest-paid actor more than once.

Television

Johnson produced and starred in HBO’s “Ballers” (2015-2019). The NBC sitcom “Young Rock” dramatized his childhood and wrestling-family upbringing.

Business

With former wife and business partner Dany Garcia, Johnson co-founded the production company Seven Bucks Productions. He launched Teremana Tequila in 2020, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing spirits brands, and co-founded the energy drink ZOA. He has also partnered with Under Armour on his Project Rock line.

In 2020, Johnson, Garcia and investment firm RedBird Capital bought the XFL football league out of bankruptcy, and it later merged with the USFL to form the United Football League.

Personal life

Johnson married Dany Garcia in 1997; they have a daughter, Simone, who has followed him into wrestling. They divorced in 2008 but remain business partners. He married singer-songwriter Lauren Hashian in 2019, and they have two daughters.

He has spoken openly about depression, including his mother’s struggles and his own, encouraging others to seek help.

Giving back

Johnson founded the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation to support children facing illness and has made numerous hospital visits and donations. He is known for surprising fans and service members with gifts, often captured on social media.

Social media pioneer

Johnson was one of the first movie stars to treat social media as a central part of his career. With hundreds of millions of followers on Instagram, he promotes films, shares workouts and responds to fans directly, and studios count his reach as part of the value he brings to a project. His upbeat, disciplined persona online matches the brand he has built across films and businesses.

Legacy

Johnson’s story is one of reinvention: from injured football player to wrestling icon, from wrestler to movie star, and from movie star to entrepreneur. His work ethic, famously early workouts and social media presence have made him one of the most recognizable people in the world.
