Mark Wahlberg: From Boston Streets to Hollywood Star and Businessman
Mark Wahlberg has transformed himself more than once, from a troubled teenager in Boston to a chart-topping rapper, a respected actor, a successful producer and an entrepreneur.
Early life
Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg was born on June 5, 1971, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, the youngest of nine children. His older brother Donnie became a member of New Kids on the Block.
As a teenager Wahlberg had serious run-ins with the law and served time in jail at 16, an experience he has said he deeply regrets and that pushed him to turn his life around.
Marky Mark
With his group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Wahlberg had a No. 1 hit, “Good Vibrations,” in 1991. He also became famous as a Calvin Klein underwear model.
Acting breakthrough
Wahlberg turned to acting with “Renaissance Man” (1994) and “The Basketball Diaries” (1995). His breakthrough came as porn star Dirk Diggler in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights” (1997).
He went on to star in “Three Kings” (1999), “The Perfect Storm” (2000), “Planet of the Apes” (2001) and “The Italian Job” (2003).
The Departed
Wahlberg earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor as a foul-mouthed police sergeant in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” (2006), which won best picture.
The Fighter
He spent years developing “The Fighter” (2010), about boxer Micky Ward, and trained for four years for the role. The film earned seven Oscar nominations, including best picture, and won two for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.
Box office star
Wahlberg starred in “Ted” (2012), “Lone Survivor” (2013), the “Transformers” films, “Deepwater Horizon” (2016), “Patriots Day” (2016), “Uncharted” (2022) and “Flight Risk” (2025). He was named one of the highest-paid actors in the world.
Producer
Wahlberg executive produced HBO’s “Entourage,” loosely based on his early Hollywood experiences, along with “Boardwalk Empire,” “In Treatment” and “Ballers.” He produced the “Entourage” movie (2015).
Business
With his brothers Donnie and Paul, a chef, Wahlberg launched Wahlburgers in 2011 in Hingham, Massachusetts. The burger chain grew to dozens of locations and was the subject of the A&E reality series “Wahlburgers.” He has also invested in the fitness franchise F45 Training, the sports drink BodyArmor, the clothing brand Municipal and the tequila Flecha Azul.
Faith and fitness
Wahlberg is a devout Catholic and is known for an intense early-morning workout schedule, which he often shares on social media.
Personal life
Wahlberg married model Rhea Durham in 2009. They have four children and moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in 2022.
Giving back
His Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, founded in 2001, supports programs for inner-city youth in Boston and elsewhere. He has also supported the Boys & Girls Clubs and veterans’ causes.
Boston identity
Wahlberg’s Boston roots run through his career. Many of his most acclaimed films, including “The Departed,” “The Fighter,” “Patriots Day” and the “Ted” movies, are set in and around Boston, and he often speaks about his loyalty to the city’s sports teams and neighborhoods. “Patriots Day,” about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath, was particularly personal, and he worked closely with law enforcement and survivors.
Collaborations
Wahlberg has made several films with director Peter Berg, including “Lone Survivor,” “Deepwater Horizon,” “Patriots Day” and “Mile 22.”
Discipline
Wahlberg’s daily routine, which has included waking before 4 a.m. for prayer and workouts, became a viral topic online. He has said structure helps him balance acting, producing, business and family.
Legacy
Wahlberg’s story is one of reinvention. He has said that his rough start made him determined to make the most of second chances, and his career across music, film, television and business reflects that drive.
