I am assuming when most people take trips to see their family in other parts of the country they try to make use of the short time they have with their loved ones. Perhaps sit around and watch old home movies or take walks and play board games?
But not in my family.
My sister, who lives in New Jersey, is out for a quick visit. The evening before she arrived she called me to ask that I book her a massage appointment for the following morning and to make sure it was early enough that it not coincide with her Brazilian blowout appointment in the afternoon. I should note that during this conversation I was straining to keep my eyelids open, was trying to read an email on my Blackberry, and trying to prevent my 2 year old from smacking her 4-week-old brother in the face with a broom. Because in addition to having my own PR firm I am also apparently her executive assistant.
This Thanksgiving while I was still sitting on a donut pillow and trying to recover from childbirth she inquired whom I would be inviting for the holiday dinner. Perhaps instead of icing my lady parts and catching up on sleep I should have been arranging a 'Welcome to California in the Fall' party for her.
As you know, she is prone to call me at varying times of the day to ask me the answers to random questions readily available on Google. She has been known to call me from New York City in the middle of a street block to see if I can look up ferry schedules for her even though there is a three hour time difference and I probably have better things to do.
Why spend the Christmas holiday helping your younger sister who gets no more than four hours of sleep per night? What use is there for sharing your inner most hopes and desires for the new year when you can get a quality pedicure at Happy Nails? Who needs to catch up with your brother-in-law, niece, and newborn nephew when there is a sale calling your name at your favorite boutique?
Have to go, Neiman Marcus is calling.
